Why We Write

Published by M M Ryan 3/1/23

Until I started writing, I never thought of myself as a writer, and a part of me doubted I’d stick with it. Why should I, I was in my forties, and though I’d been a reader all my life, writing was something I did only to complete school assignments.

Also, it was hard!!

But the stories wouldn't leave me alone, so I decided to take a stab at writing one of them. I soon discovered that--

When I gave myself the freedom to write what I want when I want--writing was exhilarating. I've been hooked ever since

Which led me to ask myself and to research what is it about writing that compels and motivates us.

For me, it’s about creating something that’s uniquely mine.  Here are some other reasons writers write taken from the article:

Overcomers: Some of us are attracted because we want to overcome the odds.

Goal chasers:  Some are motivated by the desire to complete something

To Win. ...some writers are competitive, and being the best means something.

To Have an Impact. I desire the themes of my books to change lives. I also hope that my passion and commitment to what I do, will inspire and motivate others.

To emulate their favorite writer: Some avid readers are inspired to write by their favorite authors they don’t necessarily want to copy their style, but want to create a work that will have a similar effect.

To express their voice or to share your unique history, viewpoint, experiences.

My Primary Motivation

To answer the What-If question –my writing always begins with a hypothetical situation and I walk my protagonist through the course of answering this question. By the end of my story, my protagonist will find God, peace, and themselves.

As new writers and students of writing, it’s important for you to know what motivates you. Because when things get hard, and you’re having difficulties, it will help to remind yourself of why you started your project in the first place.

However, If you’re not sure yet, just keep writing, the answer will reveal itself.
