Start Writing NOW- Even if You're Busy

Published by MM Ryan 4/5/23

You’re busy. You have a full life and many obligations. Maybe you have younger kids, or older kids, or needy adults around you. AND—you want to write.  Are you supposed to put aside your creative endeavors to take care of everything and everybody else?

The answer to that question is a resounding -NO!! It’s okay to carve out time for yourself, to explore your creativity. Especially if this is new to you or you’ve started and quit many times, before. There’s no better time to start than now. But it will take some preparation. Here are some steps:

1.    Determine your writing goals: Before you start writing, identify your writing goals. Do you want to write a novel, short story, memoir, or poetry? Understanding this can help you focus your efforts.

2.    Create a writing space: Find a quiet, comfortable place to write. This can be a desk in your home or a cozy corner in a coffee shop. Make sure you have the necessary tools, such as a computer, notebook, or pen and paper.

3.    Use the tips outlined in https://thewriteyou.com/5-ways-a-working-mom-can-set-daily-writing-goals to develop a writing routine that fits into your daily schedule. This can be writing for a certain amount of time each day/week or writing a certain number of words per day.

4.    Read when you’re not writing—even audio books count! Reading widely can help you develop your writing skills and inspire your creativity. Read books, magazines, blogs, and other writing that interests you.

5.    Practice: The more you write, the better you will become. Practice every day or set times per week, even if it's just for a few minutes. Practice writing and experiment with different styles, techniques, and genres.

6.    Connect with other writers when your schedule permits. The community can help you improve your writing and gain confidence as a writer.

Follow these steps to incorporate writing into your busy schedule. You'll be surprised as how time will open up, but you'll have to be determined and patient.

Happy Writing!
