How Old is Too Old to Start Writing?
Published by MM Ryan 4/26
I was interested in writing in my thirties but didn’t start writing until I was in my forties. My children were young and I just couldn’t find the time.
Fast forward to today, the kids are grown and gone and I’m passionate about helping other busy women writers get started. I spent those years before I found my writing rhythm feeling like I was missing out on what I was called to do.
I now understand that time was necessary, but I want to help anyone woman who knows she should be writing to get started. Even if they’re starting later in life.
Below are some inspiring examples:
1. Mary Wesley: Wesley started writing in her seventies and went on to become a best-selling author. Her most famous works include "The Camomile Lawn," "Not That Sort of Girl," and "A Sensible Life."
2. Penelope Fitzgerald: Fitzgerald began writing in her sixties and won the Booker Prize for her novel "Offshore" at the age of 63. She went on to write several other acclaimed novels, including "The Blue Flower" and "The Gate of Angels."
3. Harriet Doerr: Doerr began writing in her seventies and won the National Book Award for her novel "Stones for Ibarra" at the age of 73. She went on to write another novel, "Consider This, Señora," which was also highly praised.
4. Laura Ingalls Wilder: Wilder published her first book, "Little House in the Big Woods," at the age of 65. She went on to write several more books in the Little House series, which are beloved by generations of readers.
5. Elizabeth Jolley: Jolley published her first novel, "Palomino," at the age of 56. She went on to write several other highly acclaimed novels, including "The Well" and "Miss Peabody's Inheritance."
These women, among many others, prove that it's never too late to start writing and pursuing your passions.
