5 Goals to Help Your Writing

Published by MM Ryan 3/22/23

Setting goals is an important part of improving your writing skills and making progress. Here are a few ideas for goals you can set to help you improve your writing:

  • Write every day: Set a goal to write for a certain amount of time or to write a certain number of words every day. This will help you build a habit of writing and keep your writing skills sharp.  My minimum is 30 minutes, but very often when the words are flowing I will write longer.

  • Read more: Reading is one of the best ways to improve your writing. Set a goal to read a certain number of books, articles, or blog posts each week or month.
  • Learn a new writing skill: Identify a specific writing skill you want to improve, such as grammar, punctuation, or storytelling, and set a goal to practice that skill every day or week.

  • Get feedback: Set a goal to get feedback on your writing from someone you trust, such as a writing partner, editor, or writing group. This will help you identify areas for improvement and get valuable insights into your writing.
  • Set a deadline: Whether you're writing a blog post, an essay, or a novel, set a deadline for yourself and work towards it. This will help you stay focused and motivated to complete your writing projects.

It's important to set realistic goals that are challenging but achievable. Don't be too hard on yourself if you don't meet your goals every time – the important thing is to keep writing and improving over time.  Celebrate your wins and stay encouraged.  Stay the course and you'll have the satisfaction of sharing your writing with your audience!!
